New Chief Pharmaceutical Advisor for Wales

A new Chief Pharmaceutical Adviser for Wales has been appointed, the Chief Medical Officer for Wales, Dr Tony Jewell announced today.

Professor Roger Walker is currently a Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Cardiff University and Consultant in Pharmaceutical Public Health at Public Health Wales.

Dr Jewell said: "I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Walker as our new Chief Pharmaceutical Adviser for Wales.

"Roger brings to the role a background in Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Public Health working in the NHS.

"He has a strong academic record in teaching and research with an established reputation across the UK and beyond.

"I want to thank Jeremy Savage for the commitment and professionalism he has shown as Acting Chief Pharmaceutical Adviser following the ill health and retirement of Carwen Wynne Howells.

"Jeremy played a crucial role during the swine flu pandemic and will continue to advise me and the Assembly Government on pharmaceutical issues."

Professor Walker will join the Welsh Assembly Government in the New Year.

Professor Walker said: "I am delighted to have been appointed and look forward to working with the Welsh Assembly Government on the many aspects of pharmaceutical policy and practice. The integrated NHS in Wales, Public Health Wales and the professional advisory mechanisms give us a wonderful opportunity for developing joined up policies and practice as part of the five-year strategy which will be to the benefit of patients and deliver best value in medicines management."

Health Minister Edwina Hart said: "I'd like to congratulate Professor Walker on his appointment. He will build on Carwen and Jeremy's work to develop and enhance the role of pharmacists across Wales."
