FG to Support Local Pharmaceutical Companies

The Federal Government has promised to partner with local pharmaceuticals once they are able to meet WHO pre-qualifications to check the country's continuous dependence on foreign products at the expense of local manufacturers.Speaking when he received the members of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Group of the Manufacturing Associations of Nigeria (PMGMAN), Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Mr. Linus Awute, called on them to up-grade their facilities and improve standards in line with global practices. The WHO pre-qualification is a standardized quality assessment process which is condition for participation in global tendering process. He expressed satisfaction that three Nigerian pharmaceutical companies have already been shortlisted by World Health Organization (WHO) and hope that more will eventually get to be certified.Mr. Awute reminded the group that the Federal Government's new Procurement Act of 2007 is strict on procurement of government goods and services, but that the ministry will try to accommodate local pharmaceutical companies to strengthen their capacity.
