An Uttar Pradesh native who had recently joined EMerck pharmaceutical company at Marvasaddo Usgaon in Ponda is feared drowned inOpa River at Khandepar in Ponda on Sunday.
Munna Pande, 50, who on Sunday ventured into the Opa River at Khandepar for swimming, was dragged away by the powerful current and is now feared drowned. Police made all efforts, but could not trace the missing person till late Sunday evening.
Ponda PSI Sachin Panhalkar said Pande had gone for swimming in the river along with his four other friends on Sunday morning. However, his friends remained away from the swimming due to high turbidity of the river water. But the Pande ventured in the water. His friends tried to call him back, but Pande did not respond them.
Assuming that the river might not be deep, he walked into the water. After walking in the water about 100 meters, Pande was dragged in by the heavy current of water. He shouted for help, but his friend could not help him as they were unable to swim, PSI Panhalkar said quoting his friends.
The matter was later informed to Ponda police, who, with the help of fire services personnel and locals, conducted a search operation, but the body could not be traced till late evening. The search operation would resume on Monday morning, PSI Panhalkar said.
