The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has widened the approved use of Pharmacia Corp.'s COX-2 inhibitor Celebrex (celecoxib) to include acute pain in adults and menstrual pain, according to the company. Celebrex now has the broadest range of approved indications of any COX-2 inhibitor, according to a company release.
Celebrex is the only COX-2 inhibitor approved for the relief of pain and inflammation related to osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis. It is also approved to reduce the number of adenomatous colorectal polyps in familial adenomatous polyposis as an adjunct to standard care.
