Midwest Research Institute’s flu vaccine deal could mean $1M a year

In a partnership that could generate as much as $1 million a year for Midwest Research Institute, the research organization said Monday that it’s teaming with a Seattle-based nonprofit to help develop flu vaccines.

MRI spokeswoman Linda Cook said the two organizations have been working on the agreement for several months, so it was not prompted by the current outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus.

MRI’s partner is PATH, which aims to improve worldwide health by focusing on areas such as safe childbirth and fighting malaria, AIDS and other diseases. Vaccine development is also part of its mission.

Through the agreement, Cook said MRI will contract with pharmaceutical companies working with PATH. MRI will determine the safety and effectiveness of potential vaccines.

Cook said it’s possible the work will include investigations of potential H1N1 vaccines. That will depend on the focus of the pharmaceutical companies, she said.
