Fire chief: KV Pharmaceutical fire accidental

A massive fire Monday night at KV Pharmaceutical Co. was accidental, the Brentwood fire chief said Tuesday.

Two workers reported the blaze at 6:17 p.m. in one of the company’s mixing rooms where flammable chemicals are housed, said Brentwood Fire Chief Bob Niemeyer.

At least 16 fire departments and 20 fire trucks responded to the four-alarm fire, which burned so hot and spread so quickly due to the chemicals involved, firefighters had to try putting it out two different times because the fire got “too hot and too dangerous,” Niemeyer said.

A Glendale fireman overcome with heat was taken to an area hospital and treated.

The blaze damaged a KV building along Hanley, along with four other businesses, Niemeyer said.A request for comment from KV was not immediately returned.

Late last year, KV suspended drug shipment, halted production and recalled painkillers because the tablets were oversized.

In March, KV said it entered into a consent decree with the FDA that outlines a series of measures that will permit KV and its subsidiaries to resume manufacturing and distribution.

KV also faces lawsuits from shareholders alleging they were misled about manufacturing compliance and the company’s financial prospects.
