McKesson names new Tech Solutions head

McKesson Corp., the giant health-care services and information technology company, said Tuesday that Patrick Blake, 45, has been promoted to executive vice president and group president of its McKesson Technology Solutions unit, effective immediately.

Blake, 45, succeeds Pamela Pure, who abruptly left McKesson in late March without explanation. He reports to John Hammergren, McKesson’s (NYSE: MCK) chairman and CEO, and serves on the company’s executive committee, according to McKesson, which currently ranks 15th on the Fortune 500.

Before this promotion, Blake had been president of McKesson Specialty Care Solutions, which provides services involving specialty pharmaceutical products, including coordinated reimbursement and clinical services for patients with complex diseases, since April 2006. In that role, officials said Tuesday, he led the “successful acquisition and integration of Oncology Therapeutics Network” following a $575 million October 2007 acquisition. The company said the deal enhanced its offerings for oncology, other specialty practices and specialty pharmaceutical manufacturer customers.

Under Blake’s leadership, McKesson Specialty Care Solutions became the nation’s second largest supplier of specialty pharmaceuticals, according to the company.

Blake is now responsible for all of the businesses within McKesson Technology Solutions, including McKesson Provider Technologies, McKesson Health Solutions, RelayHealth and McKesson’s International Operations Group. The company described the overall unit as its information technology, automation and connectivity division and a leader in software, automation, services and consulting for hospitals, physician offices, imaging centers, home health care agencies and insurers.

“Health care information technology has never been more important to McKesson’s future, or to the success of our customers and the overall health care system,” Hammergren said in a statement.

Blake joined McKesson in 1996 as senior vice president for McKesson Health Systems. Three years later, he was named president of McKesson Health Systems, and in 2001 he was promoted to president of customer operations for McKesson U.S. Pharmaceutical, which increased its institutional pharmaceutical distribution business from $3 billion to $16 billion during his tenure. Prior to joining McKesson, Blake held leadership roles at Baxter International Inc., and American Hospital Supply Inc.

Pure joined McKesson in April 2001, from IDX Systems, and within eight months had been promoted to the new position of COO of McKesson’s Information Solutions business unit. She’d been executive vice president and president of Technology Solutions since April 2004, before her departure.
