Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis AG says it is cutting 1,400 sales jobs at its U.S. subsidiary.
The company says the cuts at New Jersey-based Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. will start Jan. 1.
Novartis said in a statement late Tuesday that the move was prompted by expiring patents.
The Basel-based drug maker said the layoffs would be handled in a "fair and respectful" manner and workers affected would be offered support including help finding new jobs.
