Sigma-Aldrich said its profit increased by 1% to US$94m in the fourth quarter on sales of $582m, which increased from $573m in the same period in 2009.
For the full year, the US life science and technology group reported a profit of $384m on sales of $2.3bn.
Fourth-quarter sales showed positive organic growth in both the Research and SAFC businesses.
The firm’s traditional research products in analytical chemistry, biology and traditional chemistry, with continued strong growth from its materials science products, all contributed to research sales growth.
SAFC achieved the best quarterly sales in 2010, boosted by sales of materials and precursors for semi-conductor and LED applications as well as in industrial cell culture media for biological drugs.
Chief executive Rakesh Sachdev said market conditions are not likely to change much in 2011, so Aigma-Aldrich will continue to drive sales of analytical, biology, chemistry and materials science products, to continue the high single-digit organic growth in SAFC, and to enhance e-commerce and Asia Pacific-Latin American market sales.
Worldwide sales of research products through the company's website as a percentage of total research sales were 49% for the fourth quarter of 2010 and 48% for the full year of 2010, up from 45% for the full year 2009.
Sales in International markets (Asia Pacific and Latin America) continued to show strength with organic growth of 16%, for the fourth quarter of 2010.
In China, India and Brazil, sales collectively grew 27% and 23% on a reported and organic basis, respectively, for the fourth quarter of 2010.
