In order to give a boost to the Indian pharmaceuticals industry, the government today constituted a taskforce to evolve a long-term strategy for the sector, including addressing issues relating to Intellectual Property Rights.
The 12-member Task Force, under the Chairmanship of Secretary Health Research and DG ICMR V M Katoch and Director General of Health Services R K Srivastava, will have members drawn from various agencies in the pharma sector, officials said.
The representatives will be from National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority, Department of Industry Policy and Promotion, Indian Drug Manufacturers Association, Mumbai, Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, Mumbai, Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India, Mumbai, among others.
In addition, the Chairman of the Task Force may also co-opt any other expert in the relevant area as is considered necessary.
The mandate of the taskforce would be to evolve a short, medium and long-term policy and strategy to make India a hub for drug discovery, research and development.
It will also look to evolve strategies to further the interests of the Indian Pharma industry in the light of issues related to Intellectual Property Rights and recommend strategies to capitalize the opportunity of 60 to 80 Billion USD Drugs going off�patent over next five years.
Evolving policy measures to assure National Drugs Security, promoting indigenous production of bulk Drugs, preventing takeover of Indian Pharma industry by MNCs, pricing and promotion of generic drugs and recommending measures to assure adequate availability of Quality Generic Drugs at affordable prices would among its other responsibilities.
The taskforce would also recommend measures to tackle the problem of spurious drugs-� use of anti counterfeit technologies as well as consider and advise on any other issue incidental to the above.
The group has been asked to submit its report within a time period of three months.
The constitution of the taskforce comes close on the heels of Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad recently met with the drug manufacturers in Mumbai and Hyderabad.
In both the meetings the leaders of the Pharma Industry had requested the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister to constitute a taskforce to prepare a long-term strategy for strengthening of the drug sector in the country and take all aspects of the drug industry on board, including those concerning medical devices, clinical research organisations.
