Sri Lanka's Health Ministry has said that a National Drug Regulatory Authority Bill will be presented to Parliament in July this year.
The Bill is to be presented with the aim of regulating the pharmaceutical trade and industry in the country.
Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has told the media that certain pharmaceutical companies supplying drugs to the state health service through a tender procedure in the past 10 years still operate inadequately.
According to the Minister, on-time supply of drugs and their low quality are the key issues that need to be addressed immediately. Sirisena says there is a shortage of 80 varieties of drugs in Sri Lanka.
Although there have been many attempts in the past to implement a national drug policy, it has failed, the Minister has pointed out.
