A former pharmacy association employee is facing charges of fraud, accused of stealing money and forging documents.
The 49-year-old employee was not named by police or her former employer at the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association, but Ron Guse, the association's registrar, confirmed that an internal investigation was launched last year after the missing funds were discovered.
The former employee is accused of stealing money between January 2009 and August 2010, as well as accepting money to forge documents that were necessary in the pharmacy license application process.
“We have a series of documents and there’s a manner in which those documents have to be presented and there were irregularities in the files,” Guse explained.
Six charges have been laid; they include forging documents, theft and breach of trust. The accused has been released on a promise to appear notice, and the investigation is still ongoing.
As a result of the police investigation, two pharmacists have lost their international pharmacist’s licenses here in Manitoba.
“We want to ensure Manitobans that the integrity of our licensing process is being maintained and that public safety remains our paramount concern,” Guse said.
One longtime Manitoba pharmacist was shocked at the charges.
“It takes you aback a little, because I happen to know a number of people who work there,” said Rodney Loewen, pharmacist at Remedy’sRX.
“I have every faith in those who are there now that they will correct this so that it doesn’t happen again.”
