#FSSAI drafts notification related to the purity of Steviol Glycoside

In February 2015 the FSSAI had drafted regulations related to the use of Steviol Glycoside in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations 2011 under ‘Artificial Sweetener’. Through a notification dated 20 June 2017 the FSSAI has asked stakeholders for their view comments and suggestions related to the purity of Steviol Glycoside within 60 days beginning 20 June 2017.

The FSSAI has already approved the use of Steviol Glycoside, as a non-nutritive sweetener in various foods and has also drafted the regulation along with the standards. FSSAI now wishes to make some substitutions in the earlier proposed regulations. The two substitutions the FSSAI wishes to make in the standards for Steviol Glycoside in the draft regulations are as follows

Under ‘PURITY’ FSSAI would like to substitute PURITY to the words and figures Assay/purity – Not less than 95 per cent of the total of Steviol Glycosides on the dried basis

Total ash not more than per cent to be substituted with the words and figures Total ash – Not more than 1 per cent

FSSAI has approved the use of Steviol Glycoside in chewing gum and as a Table Top Sweetener in tablet, liquid and powder forms. Steviol Glycoside can serve as a sugar substitute for diabetics as it does not induce a glycaemic response when ingested. FSSAI has also permitted the use of Steviol Glycoside in dairy based flavoured drinks, dairy based deserts like ice cream, frozen desserts, cream toppings, yoghurt, fruit nectars, non-alcoholic and non-carbonated water based beverages ices, lollies and edible ice, jams, jellies, marmalades, ready to eat cereals, carbonated water and soft drink concentrates. The use of Steviol Glycoside in these foods has been regulated and their use must be within the permitted limitations.
