Protonix (pantoprazole) by Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, a division of American Home Products Corp., is now available in pharmacies, the company has announced.
Protonix is the newest proton pump inhibitor to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Protonix 40 mg delayed-release tablets are approved for short-term healing and symptomatic relief of erosive esophagitis (EE) associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease.
EE is one of the more serious forms of GERD, a condition caused by reverse flow of stomach acids into the esophagus. More than 40% of adults in the United States experience GERD symptoms more than two times a week.
Protonix was studied in more than 100 clinical trials involving more than 45,000 patients. Protonix provided complete elimination of nighttime heartburn and regurgitation in U.S. studies, according to the company.
Protonix has no known significant drug interactions, and no dose adjustments should be required for renally impaired, elderly or mildly to moderately hepatically impaired patients, the company says.
