Generic drug market set to witness major growth in EU: Genmed

Genmed Holding, a US and Dutch based company focusing on the delivery of low cost generic pharmaceutical drugs directly to distribution channels throughout the world, said a major spurt in generic pharma sales is expected in EU countries such as Germany, France, the UK, Italy and Austria.

According to Genmed Holding, governmental pressure and new insurance policies, rather than the higher priced brand named pharmaceuticals, have increased the demand by general practitioners, specialists, and hospitals for generic medicines.

The global generics market has witnessed a 7.7% increase in 2009 from 2008, according to US market data provider BCC Research.

The generic competition is said to save the National Health Service (NHS) £8.6bn per annum in the UK.

Reportedly, the top 10 international generic drug manufacturers and distributors account for approximately 66% of the market.

Intercontinental Marketing Services Health (IMS Health) VP of Industry Relations Doug Long said there are still many players out there that are pretty small and would be ripe for acquisitions or mergers.
